US Navy jet overshoots runway into water off Hawaii

A United States Navy reconnaissance jet with 9 team members aboard crashed into water off the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Monday after overshooting the runway at a United States Marine Corps base there, military authorities stated.

There were no casualties aboard the P-8A Poseidon airplane, a twin-engine multimission patrol and reconnaissance jet with the airframe of a Boeing 737 guest airplane, according to Marine Corps representative 1st Lt. Hailey Damages.

Damages stated the conditions of the 9 workers aboard were being examined.

Photos revealed the airplane upright with its wings a little above the waterline in Kaneohe Bay off Marine Corps Base Hawaii on the primary island of Oahu, north of the capital of Honolulu.

Presence was down to around a mile at the time of the occurrence, with wind gusts as much as 21 miles per hour and mist, according to the National Weather Condition Service.

The P-8A Poseidon is a workhorse of United States Navy operations.

It can bring both torpedoes and cruise rockets, while performing antisubmarine and antisurface warfare and intelligence event objectives.

Previously this year, a P-8A operating over the South China Sea with a CNN team aboard was obstructed by a Chinese fighter jet in an encounter that saw the Chinese airplane come within 500 feet of it.

P-8 airplane are likewise zipped the Australian, New Zealand, British, Norwegian and Indian armed forces, according to Boeing.
