ICE says Fairfax County protected repeat gun offender from deportation

U.S. Migration and Customs Enforcement assaulted Fairfax County for securing an unlawful immigrant who was detained 10 times and charged with 19 criminal offenses however whom regional authorities declined to work together in turning over to deportation officers.

Jorge Armado Melendez-Gonzalez had arrests for harmful shooting and illegal wounding, to name a few charges.

Two Times, when in 2023 and once again this summertime, ICE provided deportation “detainer” demands asking Fairfax County to work together in turning over Mr. Melendez-Gonzalez when the county launched him. In both circumstances, the county declined the detainer, ICE stated.

Deportation officers detained him late recently.

” Fairfax County declined to honor 2 ICE arrest detainers and picked to launch this criminal back onto Virginia’s streets,” stated Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “These sanctuary policies make Virginians less safe.”

ICE stated Mr. Melendez-Gonzalez, from El Salvador, was very first detained by federal representatives after going into the U.S. on June 22, 2015. A migration judge bought him deported in October 2016.

Fairfax County has actually been a specific target for ICE’s rhetorical fire in the last few years. The firm represents the county as repeatedly declining to work together on detainer demands.

The Center for Migration Researches, a think tank that supports more stringent migration enforcement, stated Fairfax County’s prison ranked 3rd in the country in decreased detainer demands. Throughout a 2 1/2- year duration, the county declined cooperation on more than 1,150 detainers, according to information CIS assembled from Department of Homeland Security information.

Sanctuary jurisdictions normally restrict their cooperation with migration authorities, arguing that dealing with firms such as ICE might sour regional officers’ relationships with immigrant neighborhoods.
