Inside The Art Of Commercial Break Music For FOX’s Broadcast Of The World Series
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

How music is chosen to choose graphics or to a business break as part of FOX Sports’ broadcast of the World Series is one part art, one part individual choice, and one part prepared. Here’s how everything comes together.

The signature low-end Oberheim synthesizer at the start of Tom Sawyer by Rush plays in the background as the FOX broadcast of the World Series goes to business break. The Toronto Blue Jays are preparing yourself to come up in the next inning, and the tie-in of the music is apparent: Rush is Canada’s a lot of popular music artist with Tom Sawyer being a traditional rock anthem. Toronto … Canada … Rush … everything ties together.

However how the tune was chosen boils down to one male: FOX Sports Lead Audio Engineer and Sports Emmy winner, Joe Carpenter.

How Carpenter got included with FOX Sports doing audio is among those serendipitous profession minutes. Long a jam band fan, he began taping performances, with the similarity the Grateful Dead, which he states he saw around 200 times, and Widespread Panic. In the ’90s, Carpenter was participating in Syracuse University, where a buddy of his understood a production supervisor at the Indianapolis 500 and stated he required some aid being a runner. That would end up being his very first task in tv. From there, he fulfilled the ABC audio group for the United States Open golf competition in Chatham, Minnesota. And as he put it, “It was among those things where someone got ill, or someone could not make it, so I was drawn in as a shotgun mic operator, implying I was simply out on the golf course, following golf enthusiasts around with the microphone. Therefore as soon as I entered into doing audio, with being a taper of live music, I simply type of fell under it. I didn’t truly understand my task existed. So I simply type of went from there, working my method up the ladder through the years.”

For the MLB postseason, and particularly, the World Series, Joe will pick specific music for graphics that frame the broadcast. Joe Davis does the play-by-play, and Carpenter will deal with him ahead of the broadcast to lay specific music for the background. All broadcasters have a specific cadence– some more long-winded than others– so that ends up being a consider whether areas of tunes can consist of vocalists or rap artists, or whether it’s more important. “Davis is quite simple,” stated Carpenter, which permits versatility.

However it is the “dive music”– the music heading into business breaks, where it ends up being art.

Carpenter works from a user interface of a number of lots tune bits, all of which are certified through ASCAP or BMI for usage. And depending upon the action, he will make the call on what music makes the dive. Some clips are apparent, such as Tom Sawyer. Some, like Carpenter playing “Alive” by Pearl Jam when the Mariners were down to their last half inning of the ALCS, might not be as clear. Pearl Jam and Seattle are apparent. However to Carpenter, “Alive” had to do with the Mariners’ last possibility to survive.

Other choices are more individual. Being a jam band fan, you’ll hear a bit of Jerry Joseph with his very first band Little Ladies playing Chainsaw City, or Widespread Panic, or possibly Electric Guy by Competing Sons, which permits Carpenter to provide audiences an individual taste in music. Often it’s art. Night video game? Are the Dodgers coming near bat? How about Bark At The Moon by Ozzy Osbourne? Perhaps it will be Feel It by Portugal The Guy. How about Sweet Feeling by Aerosmith

With the Dodgers entering into the Fall Timeless for the 2nd year in a row, anticipate to hear a great deal of music with Los Angeles ties. Perhaps it’s Tinashe who came out of Pasadena, and definitely Shakedown Street by the Dead.

So, listen carefully to the music entering into the business breaks throughout the World Series video games. It’s a great little bit of art and fantastic insight into how music ties into sports.
